First Aid
- Kill the snake and handle the dead snake only by tail and keep it.
- Commonest symptom is fright - the patient should be re–assured.
- Keep the patient at rest as if he has a fracture.
- lf the patient is within 30 minutes of a medical facility he should be transported there at rest, without any first aid other than reassurance and immobilization of
the affected part. lf longer period is anticipated for evacuation. apply a light constricting band using a handkerchief or piece of cloth above the site of bite. lt
will help in minimizing absorption of the venom through lymphatics and veins. In order to be effective it has to be avoided on double bone sites like forearm and leg.
It may transiently be loosened every one hour. if causing discomfort.
- Wash the bitten surface with plain water without rubbing.
- Part should be kept in a dependent position.
- Administer pain killer e.g. Paracetamol. Do not give Aspirin since it may aggravate bleeding.
- Transfer the patient to nearest medical facility, along with the killed snake.
Treatment
Anti snake venom (ASV) is the only effective treatment for a patient with signs symptoms of envenomation. As ASV can lead to anaphylaxis (allergic reaction), it should be administered only in hospital setting under the supervision of a doctor. ASV is a polyvalent compound and is effective against most of the poisonous snake bites, provided it is administered in time and in sufficient dosage.
